Everyday after school, I headed to the woods to spend some time.

Mike "Tater" Haviland, Producer

Mike “Tater” Haviland spends at least 200 days a year filming hunts for
NRA’s American Rifleman and American Hunter, and QDMA’s Quality Whitetails.

His camera skills have taken him to 44 states and eight countries capturing footage that has appeared on Versus, ESPN, The History Channel and The Men’s Channel. Not bad for someone who considered videoing a hobby.

“During my sophomore year of high school, I filmed a hunt in Mississippi. No one killed a deer, but the experience lit a fire inside me.”

Two years later, Mike attended Crowder College in Neosho, Mo., to study wildlife biology — work that would keep him in the woods. But he didn’t stay long. The desire to video hunts burned deeply. So he sat out a semester and knocked on doors looking for camera work.

Lohman Game Calls answered first and invited him to a three-day video school. They liked what they saw and gave him steady work as a freelancer. On assignment Mike met a guy who bought video for Bass Pro Shops. It was the break he needed. Besides filming for Bass Pro’s Outdoor World and Next Generation series, Mike has videoed for Turkey Call, Turkey Country, The Hunter’s Journal and The Bullrider’s Journal.

Mike is married to Susan, and they have an 18-pound cat named Tigger, a kitten named Bailey and two dogs, Sadie and Charley. Besides hunting, Mike likes to fish, camp, shoot pool and play basketball.
